“Empower all clinicians to deliver best-in-class sleep care to their patients, anytime, anywhere.”

Dr. Anne Germain, PhD

Meet Our Founder

Dr. Anne Germain, PhD, a clinical psychologist, sleep researcher, and one of the most published experts in behavioral sleep medicine, founded NOCTEM to make evidence-based insomnia care accessible beyond the walls of academic medicine.

For over two decades, Dr. Germain has studied and treated sleep disorders at the University of Pittsburgh, where her research has shaped how clinicians understand and treat insomnia, nightmares, and trauma-related sleep disturbances. In 2019, she founded NOCTEM to bring that same evidence base to sleep clinics and CBTI providers everywhere — which is now the foundation of the COAST platform.

Founded on Decades of Sleep Science

Dr. Anne Germain was a Professor of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Clinical & Translational Science at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where she directs the Sleep and Behavioral Neuroscience Center and the Military Sleep Tactics and Resilience Research Team.

She holds a B.S. in Psychology from McGill University (1996) and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the Université de Montréal (2001), followed by postdoctoral training in sleep research and sleep neuroimaging at the University of Pittsburgh, where she remained on faculty since 2005.

Her research focused on the neurobiology of sleep disturbances in stress-related psychiatric conditions, including PTSD, nightmares, and trauma-related insomnia. She has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications, co-edited Sleep and Combat-Related PTSD (Springer, 2018), and contributed numerous book chapters on insomnia, nightmares, and trauma-related sleep disorders.

Speaking and Events

From Research to COAST

Dr. Germain is a frequently invited speaker at national sleep medicine conferences, including the national SLEEP meeting and the 2025 Philadelphia Sleep Conference, where she presented on stepped-care models for delivering CBTI at scale, the same clinical model that inspired COAST.She has served on committees for the Sleep Research Society and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

NOCTEM is grounded in the same clinical evidence Dr. Germain has spent her career developing. COAST was designed to give sleep clinics and CBTI providers the tools to deliver that same standard of care without requiring every provider to be a sleep specialist.

This is what makes NOCTEM different from a generic health-tech vendor: the platform is built on two decades of clinical research, expertise, and first-hand experience, not a software product retrofitted with clinical claims.
